5 transitional fall home accents

Transitional fall accents for the home. Pumpkins, green and wood
Green is my favorite color, and combined with wood and some soft color pumpkins, I'l have a simple Fall look around this dining table. Small changes for a big impact!
Just today I noticed how late I've been approaching Halloween decorations around our home. Perhaps it is the fact that we just moved and still assimilating the change. Having a new space that you can finally call "mine" (like children do) is a big thing for us.

On our front door we place a Harvest inspired basket to welcome Fall. Perhaps later on this week we might add some plastic spiders or even stretchable spiderweb for a spooky look.  
I love coming home and seeing how our bare walls reflect the beautiful sunlight coming from our front window in the morning, and our kitchen area later on.
We are planning on having larger windows in a near future to take advantage of the natural light that works around our home. But in the mean time, I've been busy incorporating Fall accents here and there. I love the colors that this season brings and the more because they go so perfectly with our neutral decoration.
Because of this, today I'm sharing some of the accents around our home that bring Autumn in and that can work from the beginning to the end of this season (including Halloween).

Over our mantel, I've decided that cotton was the perfect accent to balance the rough surface of the stone. It is reminiscent of this season and creates a great balance and contrast against the wall.

These pumpkins have gone from our front door (without the spiders) to our dinning table as a Halloween centerpiece. With a couple of transfers, available at Jo-Ann, they are ready to trick or treat.

Adding greenery to a this pumpkin vignette, made a welcoming statement in this receiving area. Add faux-spiderwebs for a Halloween look, or  some dry wheat bunch for a Thanksgiving table setting.

Fall front door decor


I know this tutorial might come a bit late, but Christmas decoration came earlier this year with the Home Depot Holiday Style Challenge. Now that that's done, its time to enjoy what's left of Autumn. Today I'm sharing a simple harvest front door decoration that only took me less than an hour.
Most of the materials are available at Jo-Ann (with the exception of some of the tiny pumpkins). For this project I used a big grapevine basket, dry wheat bunch, eucalyptus, faux and real tiny pumpkins and faux Chinese lantern flowers.


Having all the materials set over my dinning table for an easy access, I started making small bunches that consisted of wheat (3 pieces), eucalyptus (3 branches) and the Chinese lantern flowers (1 branch). To keep them together, I tied them with a black rubber band (loom rubber bands... but, shhhhh! my girl would not approved if I asked). By mixing in this quantities I was able to create a balance when I settle the small bunches inside the basket.


To make the arrangement, I place each small bunch inside the basket and intertwine some of the branches between the grapevine (making sure that this part looks to the door). After placing them all, I had some wheat and eucalyptus left which I also use to cover some blank patches.


To decorate this basket I use 2 tiny pumpkins from +Trader Joe's, and the rest of the decorations were all faux (including the leaves).


I love how this arrangement brings life to my gray door and the best thing is that it seems as if I went into my garden to gather all these plants. Wouldn't you agree?

A bright reflection


When we moved to our new home, the fireplace was one of the areas that I wanted to "stand out". Being so close to the entryway and next to a big window (with a direct view of the street), this area had to have a focal point that didn't distract from the sculpted header of the mantel. I wanted a piece that could be use in any type of decoration (including the seasonal ones) and that at the same time could add visual height to this room.


Many times I thought about placing a flat tv on top of the fireplace's mantel, but while researching on the web I found that there were more people against this trend that in favor. I thought that the idea of placing that black rectangle took a lot from this beautiful fireplace. So I kept looking until I found the perfect accent. 
The piece that I ended up selecting was a +kenroyhome Reyes Wall Mirror. This elegant piece has a vintage silver color that goes perfectly with the undertones of my fireplace. Besides this fact, the rays of this abstract sun design are reminiscent of the "Mediterranean Revival" style of the sculpted header.


Now that Fall is here, I've decorated my mantle but with the Reyes Wall Mirror as the focal point of this vignette. I can envision this mirror for Christmas and can't wait to decorate around it.

Soft green Fall entryway


A sublime Fall entryway is a must during this season. On my entryway these days you'll find soft greens mix with metal and to warm these up, I'm using wood and a fresh branch from our patio. A couple of pumpkin sets an Autumnal mood on this area.


Love how the natural illumination coming from the entry door hits the metal and the +HomeGoods mirror and fills our entire living room with a subtle white light. The soft surface of pumpkins seem to light up also adding a special point of interest in this vignette


The reflection of our fireplace looks as if it were an art piece hanging on the wall.

Metal plates add interest to this sideboard setting with a rustic design on the border.
A medium ceramic bowl serves as a display for my small cream colored pumpkins.

Fall entertaining home bar

Now that summer has ended, many might be wondering what to do with all the fun gatherings around the BBQ on Sundays. Fall activities can also bring great times with just the right accents. Start by picking an area where you can place a modern bar cart(so trendy right now) fill with all the basics you know your guests will love. Or, if you prefer to entertain around your kitchen and have an eye for vintage décor (like myself); try putting together a home bar. To inspired you in this matter I’ve made a mood board using accessories from Chairish with the bar stools as the main characters and with an industrial vibe. I call it an “Industrial Mix” where aluminum and bare pendant bulbs are combined to create an interesting atmosphere. Cheers! 

An easy Fall flower arrangement


Sometimes is hard to imagine how simple things can turn into great ones. In this case, a less than happy $3.99 Trader Joe’s bouquet turned out to be a wonderful arrangement. Just this morning I went into the store in search for some cute mini white pumpkins (or should I call them “The Pumpkin-saurus” because they seem rather extinct in this part of the States). I can gladly say that my mission was accomplished plus, among the colorful flowers TJ’s had, I found the last Fall bouquet that somehow looked as if it was waiting for me.
Because it was rather skimpy, I took a long pause to think on ways I can turn this into a nice little accent for our new home. Suddenly I remember that last year I bought a pumpkin glass vase (from HomeGoods) for serving candies, but I never got the chance to use. In went the flowers into my cart!

When I got home, I placed the flowers over the kitchen counter and while standing there looking at my sad bouquet and glass vase, I started rearranging each stem as if trying to make them look like those beautiful arrangements I stumble with in Pinterest. I have to confess that I know nothing about flower arrangements, yet that didn’t keep me from trying to do something that ended up looking pretty nice.

Again, I’m not a professional flower artist but in case you were wondering, here is what I did: placing one Ball canning jar inside the pumpkin glass vase I filled the vase with some wood mini disks (from Michaels).Then, I started arranging the green stems first (the ones with leaves) trying to make an imaginary triangle (a bit tilted to one side) to give it some sort of weight. After the form it took convinced me, I started adding the wheat and added to some of the empty spaces. All that I did then was to place the flowers in the remaining spaces. I did so but in small bunches that will balance the weight of the greenery from one of the sides. As for the finishing touches I added the long grass straws and the sunflower.

An Autumn mantel decoration

This year I'm super excited to celebrate all the seasons. And the reason being is that now I have a mantel to decorate. But not just any mantel; this one is a 1938 kind of mantel! Because of this great excitement, today I'm sharing my first styled mantel where I took my inspiration from the lovely colors of the stone used on its header and legs.

As you'll notice this stone has an organic design carving which I'm roughly guessing can be of Mediterranean Revival influence. Nevertheless, I can only conclude that who ever designed it thought very well on what can be used over and over again from years to come. This fireplace header carving is definitely an attention grabber hence my excitement when it comes to decorating its mantel.

Following the visual movement its organic design creates, I'm throwing several natural objects into the mix to make it more vivid. Some dry cotton branches and mini wood disks (from Michaels) echo the natural aspect of the fireplace header.

Because it is Fall (one of my favorite seasons), pumpkins and owls are a must. This feathery creature made of mercury glass (from Home Decorators Collection) came with a foam base which I took off so I could place a battery operated flickering tea light. Just love its soft glimmering light at nights

For this vignette I also used some pumpkins. One made out of wood (from Target) and the other, a real gourd. This bumpy little thing lost its stem, so I made him a new one with some strongly twisted brown paper. I hid this gourd under a apothecary glass dome (also from Michaels) with some dry honeycombs.

With this soft palette I created a Autumn mantel that can easily make a transition into Halloween  or even Christmas by just adding additional accents or even greenery. Maybe a little late, but I really enjoyed doing this fall inspired door wreath. The best part is that everything on it smells like Autumn. Because I didn’t want to use the common browns and oranges, I took advantage of the greens and yellows, to make it a little more brighter. Here is a little how-to for my newest seasonal door decor.
For the materials, you can find them at your favorite craft store; mine is Michaels, so everything I used (except the oranges, cinnamon sticks and the grapevine wreath (this last one item was from Target’s one dollar area!!!)) I bought it there.

1. Fabric leaves 2. Plastic miniature pears 3. A bag of mixed small pumpkins and squashes 4.Cinnamon sticks 5.Oven dried oranges 6. Raffia (which at the end, I did not used) 7. Fall bush with small pumpkin 8. Eucalyptus branches.
Before I started gluing and attaching, I did my own oven dried oranges. It was so easy to do! Here is how:

After all this was done, I started gluing in patches. This way it was easier to see where a pear might be needed, or a cinnamon stick, to make the wreath acquired a 3D effect. One thing that I did to add life to the composition was to darken the leaves’ veins and borders. To do this I used some Prismacolor markers similar to the colors of the leaves (but you can also use cheap markers, making sure to paint in layers until the desire effect).

At the end, and to hang the piece, I used some burlap ribbon (from Michaels) to add a vintage-barn look. With it, I made a medium size ribbon to balance the heaviness of the wreath.
